Our friends over at Some-Antics
have a poetry slam every month,
and each year all of the years previous winners
come together for the championship slam.
so on friday 19th January, the following happened.
some poetic licence may be used!
Friday night
crowd
murmurs.
An echoed chorus.
A dull roar.
No empty seats.
A sea of faces, awaiting
Something quite magical.
A lyrical Masterpiece.
"Do we want some Poetry?"
Sammy asks,
a roar.
in agreement,
rocking the foundations.
Battle lines drawn
best lines in mind.
Books primed.
Thirteen
unlucky for some
but not for Some-Antics.
A perfect number.
Enter stage left a slideshow,
of perfect poetry flow.
The way tears did show
In those early words.
fearless voice breaks
through choked lumps
deep in throat.
What a start to the ride.
Poetry told from the heart.
audiences tear-oiled
eyes open wide.
As more faces flickered by
tones changed through the night.
From high hopes,
to low downcast notes.
We are treated next
to a short set
from the holder
of the crown,
handing over her title
to someone new.
last year's champion
Nancy Dawkins downs
her sceptre with
words of perfection.
A well-earned round
of applause from us to you.
Then 13 became six.
Another round of highlights
under burning stage light
but the poets showed no fright.
just hot poetic insights.
With flights of fancy
through worlds of fantasy,
to wistful stories leaving you
wishing for aching seas.
Rick Dove took the mic.
Took us on a ride,
no one moved,
not a sound, just all gazing
open eyed.
Brilliant.
Seriously. Brilliant
Buy his book.
Judgment made
another cull now only three remain.
Jae, Carolina and Ellie.
A perfect trio.
Put to the sword.
Jae with a voice
that could shock the gods,
rumbled the foundations with his words.
As the crumbling walls o LCB Depot strained
to hold on, he turned and sat down.
The walls sighed a joyous sigh
at withstanding the storm
with just a few broken tiles.
Ellie gave us some of her best words,
In perfect voice.
Images swirled through the air
with every lyrical slip
of wonderment
that fell from her lips.
Carolina brought us wit and smut,
her playful words hug the room,
to clear away any sense of doom.
Then it's over.
No more words.
It's down to the judges.
As the raffle throws
sweets and booze,
Dinosaur tampons, and
Leicester knock off guess who
gifts of immense pleasure
and other random Aldi
middle aisle treasure.
The judgements were made
A new Some-Antics champion.
Picking apart three
and coming up with one.
The ever-brilliant Ellie
who deservedly won.
Massive well done to everyone that performed, was an epic night.
So happy for Ellie, who we will be bringing back to Get Mouthy
later in the year, always worth looking forward to!
And s huge thank you to Sammy Nour and the Some-Antics crew,
without you all I wouldn't be doing what I am.
