After a well-deserved summer break,
we welcomed back Run Your Tongue,
Held on the first Thursday of every month
at the vegan bar on Granby Street Leicester.
The room feels warm and inviting,
slightly gothic in the faux candlelight,
Also possibly haunted,
from the strange banging
that randomly comes from a disused door!
The perfect place to delight
in poetic words taking flight.
As the applause ripples
through the crowd
The "not bubbly"*
Rosa Fernandez,
complete with Fanta dress,
takes hosting duties.
* Rosa did a poem about not
liking being called a bubbly person,
so, I think I've avoided that
in the best way possible! *
We had a mix of talented open micers.
Some regular faces, some first timers.
The quality never dipped below
excellent, and often the roof was raised.
We saw Kulvir take the mic
giving us some excellent haiku poems.
Sham with an amazingly powerful personal
poem, that had the audience
completely silent, listening intently,
Tears welling up in eyes.
Magician John Constantine
put on his poetry hat
and delivered some magical lines.
We also had a zoom feed with 2 poets
from over the pond. Delivering their poetry
to us on the big screen. With both giving interesting takes on the A.I future
we have coming, but don't start me on A.I
I'll never shut up and this will end up
as a ranting piece rather than the praise
of great Poetry that it deserves to be.
We had Shakespeare,
some Edgar Allen Poe-esque poetry.
A flute player, who created an atmospheric
soundscape to lose yourself within,
and take a break
from the words for a short while.
Poetman closed off the open mic
with a piece about travelling to London,
filled with his perfectly timed humour.
Then Chris Oliver took the mic.
Now Chris is a poet I really admire,
his work is full of wordplay,
clever metaphors, twisting lyrical pieces
that swirl around in your head
long after you have heard them.
All delivered in a relaxed, perfect smooth style,
no stutters, no mic pops, just clean and crisp.
I think this was the best set I've seen him do,
Every poem had something unique,
a clever twist or a different lyrical beat
All in all, a great night
The perfect way to spend
a Thursday evening,
The bar has a large selection of cocktails that look amazing,
I however don't drink, but did have a lovely mocktail.
So, get yourselves down to the next one
if you can,
at the vegan bar
on Granby Street.
On Thursday 7th September.
I apologise if names are incorrect.
Thanks for reading,
please support the local art scene
Peace, Love and Poetry
Kyle
