Pinggg K! 15th August
Something I love about this city
is the amount of different poetry events,
there is something that caters to everyone.
You find new poets
that may find other nights not to their tastes,
or are too busy, or just don't know
that the other nights exist
and you get your regulars,
that try to fit in each night.
Because you always come away afterwards
filled with that sense
that you only get after a poetry event.
Like you've learnt something, been entertained,
laughed cried, fell in love and been hurt.
All the different emotions we have are shared.
And in that way Pinggg K! is no different.
Pinggg K! has been running for a long time,
in various locations, but since covid it has found
It's home in the cafe area of the Y theatre.
Held every 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Hosted by Richard Byrt.
This is a much smaller scale event
than some of the other nights,
it's nice and relaxed,
with a spread of biscuits and chocolates
laid out over the big table.
There are no mics, no theatrics
(Surprisingly with the venue)
This event lets the words
speak for themselves.
It starts with a round table
poetry writing exercise,
This month everyone was given a picture
and ten minutes to put some words
to the image.
All are invited to share their works,
though there is no pressure to participate
it is completely up to you
whether you will write or read
but most people did,
which was a beautiful thing,
everyone created something unique
and truly their own work.
After a short break, long enough to buy
a drink from the well-stocked bar/cafe
and to spend a bit of time connecting
with the other poets, it's onto the second half
Where we had an open mic.
Sean Benjamin, Greg, Kamisha, Steph, Bobba, Lexi
Myself, and numerous other people
I didn’t get names for, all performing.
We had a real mixture of themes to the poetry,
Covering a vast number of subjects, all delivered
Cleanly enough to hear without a mic.
Special mentions have to go to Kamisha f
or her powerful vocal delivery and great words
and to Lexi, who had literally started writing her poem
halfway through the break, and had a complete piece written
by the time she performed, and she delivered it
like it was a poem that she had been doing for months.
Then the headliner took the imaginary mic.
Carolyn Turner has been a regular at Get Mouthy
and really brings to life the struggles of slaves
and people from the Caribbean,
she looks into ancestry and what it means to us today,
and to the struggles that people are still having.
She held everyone in her words,
listening intently to every verse
and every story.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening,
Whether you want to be involved
or just sit back and listen to the words.
Pinggg K! is back on the 19th of September.
Please support the local arts scene, there are so many
different events and artists, of all styles,
and they should be seen or heard.
Peace, Love & Poetry
Kyle.
