Caroyln Turner interview

In the latest of our poet interviews, we have November Headliner
Carolyn Turner.   Anyone that saw our Nottingham show, or got along to this months "we are the headliners" will have a good idea of what to expect. brilliant heartfelt poetry on a range of themes, that will stay with you long after the event.

I started writing poetry when I was a teenager

and loved English language and literature

but went down the science root.

I don’t recall any of those

but the first poem I remember

and still have I wrote in 2003.

I wrote a few the 1990’s

as part of my therapy but never kept them.

I write poetry to try and make sense

of the thoughts in my head.

I write about the things I am passionate about

and to tell stories that others might want to hear.

A history they may not know.

My work is eclectic.

I write about everything and anything.

A main body of my poetry centres around

historical and modern-day slavery,

women issues such as domestic violence,

injustices and current affairs. I also write poetry

around nature, fauna and flora or anything

that just happens to move me.

I love the way poetry frees you.

Gives you permission to write about yourself,

others and address issues you might otherwise not engage in.

I love history, any history. It takes you to a place you can only imagine.

You are looking at it through the eyes of today.

You may read something from over a century ago

and think life must have been tough and awful.

It was probably both of those things

but life would have also been full of love,

relationships, marriages, births, hopes and desires.

I try and weave theses together into my poetry.

Many of my poems may be a hard read

but I try and lace them with hope

and those striving for betterment.

I believe Leicester has a brilliant and dynamic poetry scene.

There is something out there for everyone.

The poetry community is such a wonderful,

welcoming place for anyone who feels they want to put pen to paper

and share, or not share. Just listen and soak it all in.

We could always do better.

I think from a personal point of view

that women are underrepresented,

especially older black women in the arts per se.

I would like to see more women of colour come forward

and share their histories and their stories.

I would also love more children’s workshops.

That’s were poetry starts with the very young.

I remember learning poems and rhymes

before learning anything else. Ones I can still recall now,

decades later.

We need to move our young people away

from their screens and encourage them to write

about the things that inspire them, politic, current affairs,

our wonderful planet and their struggles.

It would help them to process their inner thoughts

and cope with a frantic world we live in.
