Jazmine Cartwright
aka @supportyourlocalpoet on Instagram,
is a poet I've known for some years.
Someone I was lucky enough to meet during
many Some-Antics shows back in the day.
Including the book launch for this book.
So, I was really surprised when I realised
that I didn't own a copy.
Well now that has been remedied
let me dive into the river
and see where it takes me...
Upgrade is a short collection,
but don't let that deceive you.
There are little flower buds
of thought in here that stick
long after reading,
creating wildflower fields
for your mind to wonder through.
There is no soil showing,
nor any weeds growing, instead we have
a world that is teasing, easing you in,
then when you are wanting more
it asks you for patience.
let these words sink in. Don't rush.
And during its short stay it will embrace you
with beauty in the words that play.
They will leap across the page.
The white space just as important
as the black ink. The silence felt just as keenly
as those loud roars of the fires from hell.
And that's the thing with poetry,
it’s not always what is said,
sometimes it's the way it's said
or the things left unaired
that are so important to a piece,
and every piece within
is given perfect room to breathe.
This book has it all. We have short pieces
that are a slice of a day, we have heartfelt
memories sown into every pore of the paper field.
There is humour and sadness. So very much
like life in general. There is light and shade
in the black ink on the white page.
Jazmine is currently hard at work
on her second collection,
and what I've read of it so far
is brilliant. We havent been able to get her
onto our stage at Get Mouthy yet,
So please give her a follow
and support your local poet!
