Get Mouthy 5

Get Mouthy 5

Nov 13th 2023

Green dress flows

Through the shadows,

into the beaming lights

A rustle of pages

As Carolina, our host,

takes the stage for the night.

She has the audience

in the palm of her hand,

With witty comments

that always seem to land.

Introducing A whirlwind of poetry,

A smorgasbord of words and styles

to tantalise the taste buds.

Bringing tears and smiles.

With every line.

We have new faces,

regulars and all in between

Kane is our first new face

to enter that sacred space.

the empty stage, now given life

With a short set of poems,

that showcase a unique rhythmic quality

and depth of thinking on display.

A welcome start to a night of poetry.

Next up we had Lyd Arlo

Someone who is fast becoming

a member of our little poetic family

Strong, powerful and heartfelt words sown

into the audience's ears to grow into Poetree

Next up we had our two comedians

Joseph followed by Jack,

adding a bit of humour to the room,

No need for a comedy laughing track.

The laughs kept coming with

Julia Wood's theatrical tales of life.

Harmony, was next,

one of our original family members

from back in the firebug days

Took to the stage

like a warming hug

that gets inside and stays.

Then she brought fire-filled words,

passionate and burning.

To send us into a well-earned break.

Our Headliner Carolyn

is a Get Mouthy regular,

And a great poet and storyteller.

This was her second feature

having joined us in Nottingham

for our Hockley hustle event,

And she never disappoints,

Giving us another brilliant set,

Almost entirely different

from the one she delivered in Nottingham.

A poet with a huge back catalogue.

Someone for whom I have huge respect.

After a short break,

I took the stage to give a rendition

of my poem World War three,

seems a fitting poem in these dark times.

Then I returned quietly to my place of retreat, my front placed seat

to witness a few more delicate treats.

Kerry is another that has fast become

one of our family

And is a poet to watch,

she has already won a slam

at some antics,

shows a brilliant balance

of humour and emotion

And is always wanting to learn,

Which makes her future

one to watch upon

with eyes wide open.

After Kerry we welcomed Anna onto our stage,

and hopefully we will see them again,

a brief moment of brilliance,

if only time was on our side.

Luca was next with another great showing,

A delight hearing about the "love" of cake.

Something I never thought I'd hear from the stage,

really was the cherry on top of a great night

But it didn't stop, we had sprinkles and 100s & 1000s from Harmony who wanted

to test a quick poem from memory,

which is part of what we aim for,

making Get Mouthy a place to feel free

to try new things, to learn and teach.

Me and Carolina

(With a little help from Get Mouthy friend, Joey)

gave our communal poem a read.

Love doing these,

it's such a challenge

to be given a poem

That our lovely audience creates

and then having to attempt it

straight off the bat. A true Get Mouthy moment.

Then we packed up. Said our farewells,

and vacated the building,

off into the darkness of night,

words ringing around our heads.

To become dreams

as we sleep soundly in our beds.

Thank you for reading,

Peace, Love & Poetry

Kyle

Caroyln Turner interview

In the latest of our poet interviews, we have November Headliner
Carolyn Turner.   Anyone that saw our Nottingham show, or got along to this months "we are the headliners" will have a good idea of what to expect. brilliant heartfelt poetry on a range of themes, that will stay with you long after the event.

I started writing poetry when I was a teenager

and loved English language and literature

but went down the science root.

I don’t recall any of those

but the first poem I remember

and still have I wrote in 2003.

I wrote a few the 1990’s

as part of my therapy but never kept them.

I write poetry to try and make sense

of the thoughts in my head.

I write about the things I am passionate about

and to tell stories that others might want to hear.

A history they may not know.

My work is eclectic.

I write about everything and anything.

A main body of my poetry centres around

historical and modern-day slavery,

women issues such as domestic violence,

injustices and current affairs. I also write poetry

around nature, fauna and flora or anything

that just happens to move me.

I love the way poetry frees you.

Gives you permission to write about yourself,

others and address issues you might otherwise not engage in.

I love history, any history. It takes you to a place you can only imagine.

You are looking at it through the eyes of today.

You may read something from over a century ago

and think life must have been tough and awful.

It was probably both of those things

but life would have also been full of love,

relationships, marriages, births, hopes and desires.

I try and weave theses together into my poetry.

Many of my poems may be a hard read

but I try and lace them with hope

and those striving for betterment.

I believe Leicester has a brilliant and dynamic poetry scene.

There is something out there for everyone.

The poetry community is such a wonderful,

welcoming place for anyone who feels they want to put pen to paper

and share, or not share. Just listen and soak it all in.

We could always do better.

I think from a personal point of view

that women are underrepresented,

especially older black women in the arts per se.

I would like to see more women of colour come forward

and share their histories and their stories.

I would also love more children’s workshops.

That’s were poetry starts with the very young.

I remember learning poems and rhymes

before learning anything else. Ones I can still recall now,

decades later.

We need to move our young people away

from their screens and encourage them to write

about the things that inspire them, politic, current affairs,

our wonderful planet and their struggles.

It would help them to process their inner thoughts

and cope with a frantic world we live in.
